REWILD BY WESTIN

Rewild by Westin

by Marriott International | Designed by EoA

People have an innate need to connect with nature. It affects our wellbeing. Westin’s design philosophy takes inspiration from this notion, known as biophilia. Rich textural details and soft nuanced palettes are offset by a clean, modern residential aesthetic. Together, these elements create an immersive experience of renewal to recharge and center our guests.

REWILD BY WESTIN

Parametric Wall

Farmboy Custom Fabrication

Inspiration for this dimensional accent on the east wall of ReWild comes from the Manhattan Schist, the second oldest of Manhattan’s bedrocks that was formed over 450 million years ago. A strong, undulating and iconic form that was the foundation of the city, the feature wall in the booth brought elements of the historic bedrock to create the 20-foot long parametric sculpture.

Behind The Design

We created a model of complex, elegant curving based on the elevations we were given by EoA. Using a 3D modelling software that allowed different geometric forms to be shaped and manipulated, we were able to fine-tune the artful design while working around other environmental elements including the television, wall plants, and seating nook. The organic flow of the parametric wall design was carefully considered to not obstruct the view of the monitor to ensure it could be seen from various areas of the booth, and ensuring that the installation would not extrude out too far and obstruct traffic or cause accidents.

After we were happy with the organic shape, 84 panels were sliced from the 3D design and converted to 2D profiles. We shared the profiles with our production partner, Fairmont Designs, who then sent them to a CNC machine to be cut out and assembled by hand.

REWILD BY WESTIN

The Well

Farmboy Custom Fabrication

The Well provides an interactive experience that speaks to the importance of hydration during travel and for an individual’s overall well-being. A dramatic, self-service installation that’s a focal feature of typical Westin lobbies, The Well builds community and celebrates hydration – providing a gathering spot where guests select complimentary water that best meets their well-being needs and refill on the go.

Behind The Design

A focal feature in the booth and an in-property extension of the Westin guest experience, we developed this expansive ‘grove’ installation also using our 3D software to develop a monolithic expression of form, including a decorative textural treatment that defines The Well space. The three freestanding trees and The Well was fabricated, hand-sculpted, and finished with high-density foam to create the integrated water delivery station that builds community and celebrates wellness through hydration.

As a New Yorker, I love the nature that forms our city. The native plants, the waterways, the rocks, the shells, the interconnected ecosystems. Being able to deeply observe nature and discover forms, patterns, and colors inspires me every day.

Art can be a positive tool for change. Focusing on nature in my work not only inspires my art, but helps me focus on how I can be a better advocate for our planet through my actions and activism.

BEHIND THE Design

The narrative for the Revive by Element booth draws on the physical origins of the midtown locale with the brand's distinctive ties to wellness and a contemporary Nordic aesthetic. The design connects Element and the personality of Hudson Yards in a symbiotic immersive experience. Zara’s live mural takes inspiration from the river's natural ecosystem, including the restorative oysters, bold rock formations, flowing water, and the organic shapes and forms that layer to create this special waterway.

Rope Installation

By Marivi Manaluz

About The Artist

Marivi Manaluz is the creator and maker behind GreenElephant BK. A first generation Filipina-American, her love for fiber came from her Lola (grandmother) who taught her to crochet as a child. Marivi loves to take inspiration from her surroundings; from the urban context of her Brooklyn studio to the Berkshire mountains. Marivi is motivated to take the average knot to new heights; her pieces range from commercial commissions to home decor to accessories, bringing a vintage art form to the modern world. When she is not working on her pieces, she is teaching macrame in small limited workshops in Brooklyn. Her work has been featured online in Fiber Art Now, BIPOC Macrame, Macrame Makers, just to name a few. Marivi currently resides in Brooklyn, NY and her recent creations can be viewed on Instagram at @greenelephantbk or at greenelephantbk.com.

In creating these two pieces, I envisioned something natural and organic. I chose to create both pieces using the barrel knot. Originally used by fishermen and climbers, the barrel knot is solid in shape, yet creates a more fluid design when tied at dynamic heights.
[My first piece] is inspired by the ocean, I set out to create a wave pattern that conveyed movement and energy. Given the origins of the barrel knot, and the space for conversation that this piece was designed to be exhibited in, my goal was to highlight structure while offering the possibility of exchange.
In my second piece, the culmination of knots in the center starts to disperse to the top and to the bottom. The piece symbolizes how wind has no restrictions and flows where it pleases. Incorporating the natural effect of wind provided the organic feel I envisioned for the piece.

BDNY Main Stage

BDNY Main Stage

Designed by Studio 11

The art narrative for the BDNY Main Stage area is inspired by New York’s rich history of community murals as well as characters you might find in a boutique hotel lobby. The combination of artistic old world glamour and modern day luxury provides a perfect “New York Moment” for the space.

BDNY MAIN STAGE

Stage Gallery Wall

Farmboy Licensed Artwork
+ ORIGINALS

Emanating vintage New York elegance and charm, the main stage gallery wall showcases an eclectic mixture of portraiture, photography, and playful concepts that exude the approachable sophistication of some of the city’s top boutique hotels.

THE STORIES BEHIND THE ART

This dynamic and historical collection exudes playfulness, elegance, and charm that merges old world glamor with modern luxury. With an intersection of classic and contemporary elements intertwining with a mixture of Farmboy’s own licensed artwork and originals, each image builds on the storytelling of one of New York’s most vibrant and iconic periods of the city’s history in art and design.

In the collection you’ll find nods to distinctive 20th century creations. A series of intimate fashion sketches from the New York Public Library archives harken back to the city’s transformative Gilded Age. Abstract geometric forms by multidisciplinary artist El Lissitsky utilize shifting axes and multiple perspectives, taking great influence by the Bauhaus and Constructivist movements that went on to dominate 20th century graphic design. Photography by Alfred Stiegletz, a New Jersey-born artist who greatly contributed to New York’s art scene and ran prominent galleries into the final decades of his life, speaks to his instrumental impact in making photography an accepted art form throughout his 50-year career.

With final pieces of Farmboy original artwork included to round out the collection, together the gallery artwork provides an artful glimpse of one of New York’s most influential periods, making it the perfect backdrop for the innovative, forward-thinking, and thought-provoking discussions to be had at this year’s BDNY conference sessions.

Mural Dividers

Farmboy Licensed Artwork

Taking inspiration from the art direction of the main stage gallery wall, the mural artwork features lively painterly abstracts evoking a sense of play, whimsy, and a spirited energy to match the enlightening conference session discussions.

THE STORY BEHIND THE ART

Inspired by the iconic murals accenting the walls of landmarks like the Metropolitan Opera and the Chrysler building, this Farmboy custom artwork celebrates autumn in New York and evokes a sense of movement mixed with a playful and whimsical energy. The design is reminiscent of the style of painter Marc Chagall whose abstract approach merged Cubism, Fauvism, and Surrealism to form his distinctive and historically impactful practice.
