THE ART NARRATIVE

THE HEALING CANOPY

An abundance of trees woven throughout the streets has earned Atlanta its reputation as a “city in a forest,” leading the way with an organic approach that is rare in urban areas. Not simply for aesthetic value, the city’s lush tree canopy filters out pollutants, cools sidewalks and buildings and brings a sense of comfort to its inhabitants.

This art concept is inspired by this lush urban landscape and with an understanding of the strong body of evidence that supports the healing properties of natural art in health care spaces.

A forest, beautiful in its nature, is also a complex environment where each individual plant relies on the ecosystem for growth and success. All evergreen forests share the same inherent structure. From the forest floor up to the tree tops, life is divided into 5 distinct layers, each with their own unique mix of plant and animal life.

These levels are the basis for our art inspiration and serve as a narrative throughout the property. From the lush, dense feel of the forest floor, where there is movement and life, the art changes in theme and aesthetic as if moving through the layers and emerges in a calm clearing, the light canopy. This idea speaks not only to the patient path to wellness, but also as a means to visually navigate and identify the spaces, whilst also paying homage to the natural landscape surrounding the hospital. Purely Atlantan.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Christopher Derek Bruno

Welcoming patients, staff, and visitors in the lobby space of the Piedmont Atlanta Hospital’s new tower is a colorful lenticular installation created by Atlanta-born artist Christopher Derek Bruno. Christopher’s commission was created with inspiration from his own personal reflections as a recovering patient himself. Through his practice exploring light and color theory, the final 20-foot piece offers viewers a moment of calming and peaceful respite.
